Watering tips:
Trees and shrubs require regular watering, however, they don't require daily watering. Normally, Mother Nature provides enough, but in recent times with the drought conditions we've had, additional watering has been required for trees and ornamental shrubs planted in the last 2 years.
Proper watering should be a slow-drip type applied around the perimeter of the trunk, away from the trunk out to about where the furthermost limbs end. In drought conditions, water approximately every 2 weeks thoroughly. Depending on the tree or shrub that you have the root zone will be in the upper 12" of top soil and this is where you want your supplemental watering to go. Shallow watering encourages root grow to the surface, making the plant more susceptible to future damage during drought conditions.
Pruning tips
Spring flowering shrubs should be pruned soon after they have bloomed. Pruning before they bloom and you will lose this years bloom. Because most spring flowering shrubs bloom on last year's growth, if you wait too long to prune them you'll risk losing next years blooms.
Fruit trees should be pruned before new growth appears in the spring.
Evergreen trees can be pruned sparingly anytime.
